박태동 l PARK, taedong (b.1961)
He graduated from Seoul National University's Department of Sculpture and Seoul National University's Graduate School. Starting with the solo exhibition at the Seoul Arts Center in 1993, he has held more than 20 solo exhibitions in Korea, the United States, and Germany, and participated in more than 400 invited exhibitions and group exhibitions in Seoul, Beijing, Italy, Hong Kong, Berlin, Israel, etc. His works are in the collections of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art’s Art Bank, Pohang Museum of Steel Art, Prime Minister’s Office in Sejong City Government Complex, Hyundai Department Store, Raemian Cǽlĭtus, CJ ENM Entertainment Division, Ibis Hotel (Anguk-dong, Seoul), Fairmont Hotel (Singapore), Asiana CC, Freeman Foundation U.S.A, etc.
The artist says that humans are drawn to things that carry intense in psychological terms. From a literary and artistic standpoint, humans sometimes use the expression “jewel-like” to describe some things in everyday life. It means that they are beautiful and precious.
Expressions such as flowers, butterflies, and rainbows also mean vague temporal concepts that disappear like illusions, but to the artist, a ‘gem’ means a permanent and unchanging body. The form of a perfectly symmetrical, cut gem is reinterpreted as a mineral form with an irregularly cut shape. By combining random objects that are not in a polished form like precious metals (jewels), we re-cut ‘precious things’. The artist has defined the form of a “gemstone” as a polyhedron with an irregular cut, and has not let go of the expression of the materiality that has been of interest from the beginning.
Recently, He has been trying again to find the kind of tangible expression that he has been interested in and searching for since his youth.
서울대학교 조소과와 서울대학교 대학원을 졸업했다. 1993년 예술의전당에서 첫 개인전을 시작으로, 한국과 미국, 독일에서 20여 회의 개인전을 개최했으며, 서울, 북경, 이탈리아, 홍콩, 베를린, 이스라엘 등에서 400여 회의 초대기획전, 단체전에 참여했다. 국립현대미술관 미술은행, 포항시립미술관, 세종시 정부종합청사 총리실, 현대백화점, 첼리투스, CJ ENM, Ibis Hotel(서울 안국동), Fairmont Hotel(Singapore), 아시아나 CC, Freeman Foundation U.S.A 등에 작품이 소장되어 있다.
작가는 인간이 심리적 측면에서 강렬한 욕구를 수반하는 것들에 이끌리고 있다고 말한다. 그 중 인간은 문학적 예술적 입장에서 일상의 어떠한 것들에 "보석 같은”이라는 표현을 하기도 한다. 아름답고 소중하다는 뜻이다.
꽃, 나비, 무지개 등의 표현은 허상처럼 사라지는 불분명한 시간적 개념을 뜻하기도 하는데, 작가에게 '보석’은 항구 불변의 몸체를 의미한다. 완벽하게 대칭으로 정형화되어 커팅 가공된 보석의 형태를 다시 불규칙하게 잘라진 형상의 광물 형태로 재해석한다. 귀금속(jewel)처럼 다듬어진 형태가 아닌 제멋대로인 개체들을 조합해서 ‘귀한 것’을 새롭게 재단한다. 작가는 불규칙 절단의 다면체로 원석(gemstone)의 형태를 정의해왔으며, 애초부터 관심 갖던 물성(物性)에 대한 표현을 놓지 않고 있다.
최근 들어 청년기부터 지속적으로 관심 갖고 찾고 있던 즉물적 표현에 대한 시도를 다시 하고 있다.
